Custom ductwork, architectural panels, and decorative metalwork — fabricated by hand, finished to spec, delivered without shortcuts.

"We handed him a napkin sketch of a radius soffit and got back something the architect actually framed. Tightest seams I've seen outside a shop that charges three times as much."
Marcus Delacroix, project manager in hard hat at construction site

How Custom Ductwork
Gets Quoted

Most contractors get burned by vague estimates. Here's exactly how pricing works when you bring a job to a fabrication shop — so you can scope it right from the start.

01

Drawings or dimensions first

A clear sketch — even hand-drawn — beats a verbal description every time. Throat diameter, offset dimensions, connection type (slip, drive, TDC flange), and material. If you have a mechanical drawing, attach it. If you don't, a photo of the existing piece with a tape measure in frame works.

02

Material drives the number

Galvanized is the workhorse — it's the cheapest to buy and fastest to cut. Stainless costs two to three times more per pound and takes longer to weld clean. Copper is priced by the day it ships. Aluminum sits in the middle. If you're flexible, say so — I'll tell you what makes sense.

03

Quantity matters more than you think

One-offs carry full setup time. If you need twelve identical transitions, the per-piece price drops because I program the brake once and run the batch. Tell me if this is a one-time custom or part of a recurring job.

04

Finish and tolerance

Raw edges and mill finish ship fastest. Ground seams, mirror polish, or painted finish add time. Tolerances tighter than ±1/16" require fixturing — that's a conversation before I quote, not a surprise on delivery.

Rule of Thumb

If the fitting has more than three angles, a tapered section, or connects two round-to-square transitions, plan for a full-custom quote — not a catalog price.

What Gauge Means
for Your Project

Gauge is thickness — and thickness is the single biggest lever on cost, weight, and how long the finished piece holds its shape. Here's the working range.

22ga
Light HVAC liner, decorative trim0.030"
20ga
Standard ductwork, light panels0.036"
18ga
Commercial duct, structural panels0.048"
16ga
Heavy duct, architectural cladding0.060"
14ga
Structural facade, load-bearing panels0.075"

16-gauge is the sweet spot for most architectural work — stiff enough to hold a flat plane without oil-canning, light enough that a two-person crew can handle 4×8 sheets without a lift.

Forming Methods

Brake-Formed vs.
Roll-Formed

Both bend metal. They produce different shapes, tolerances, and cost structures — and choosing wrong means either paying for capability you don't need or getting a part that doesn't fit.

Brake-Formed

  • Sharp, precise bends
  • Ideal for one-offs & small runs
  • Angles from 0° to 180°
  • Tolerances to ±1/32"
  • Lower tooling cost

Best for

Panel flanges, Z-clips, custom trim, one-off transitions

Roll-Formed

  • Continuous curved profiles
  • Consistent cross-section
  • High-volume production
  • Radius bends & cylinders
  • Higher initial setup

Best for

Downspouts, radius fascia, curved column wraps

Quick Decision

If your part has a straight angle — brake it. If it curves continuously along its length — roll it. If it does both, it's a compound form and we need to talk before you order material.

"The copper cladding panels came back with tolerances tighter than our shop drawings. Installed in a day. The GC asked for the fabricator's number before we even signed off."
