How Custom Ductwork
Gets Quoted
Most contractors get burned by vague estimates. Here's exactly how pricing works when you bring a job to a fabrication shop — so you can scope it right from the start.
Drawings or dimensions first
A clear sketch — even hand-drawn — beats a verbal description every time. Throat diameter, offset dimensions, connection type (slip, drive, TDC flange), and material. If you have a mechanical drawing, attach it. If you don't, a photo of the existing piece with a tape measure in frame works.
Material drives the number
Galvanized is the workhorse — it's the cheapest to buy and fastest to cut. Stainless costs two to three times more per pound and takes longer to weld clean. Copper is priced by the day it ships. Aluminum sits in the middle. If you're flexible, say so — I'll tell you what makes sense.
Quantity matters more than you think
One-offs carry full setup time. If you need twelve identical transitions, the per-piece price drops because I program the brake once and run the batch. Tell me if this is a one-time custom or part of a recurring job.
Finish and tolerance
Raw edges and mill finish ship fastest. Ground seams, mirror polish, or painted finish add time. Tolerances tighter than ±1/16" require fixturing — that's a conversation before I quote, not a surprise on delivery.
Rule of Thumb
If the fitting has more than three angles, a tapered section, or connects two round-to-square transitions, plan for a full-custom quote — not a catalog price.

What Gauge Means
for Your Project
Gauge is thickness — and thickness is the single biggest lever on cost, weight, and how long the finished piece holds its shape. Here's the working range.
16-gauge is the sweet spot for most architectural work — stiff enough to hold a flat plane without oil-canning, light enough that a two-person crew can handle 4×8 sheets without a lift.
Brake-Formed vs.
Roll-Formed
Both bend metal. They produce different shapes, tolerances, and cost structures — and choosing wrong means either paying for capability you don't need or getting a part that doesn't fit.
